Where does the Coverage Maps data come from?

This data is contributed by our global community!

By allowing Speedtest to periodically check mobile coverage, quality, and location data–even when the app is closed or not in use–you’re taking part in a global effort to map the most comprehensive view of operator coverage.

Your location will not be shown on Coverage Maps, except to you.

What’s different about this new Coverage Maps?

The previous version of Coverage Maps displayed a heat map indicating the number of scans in an area and was only able to show data for LTE coverage. Our latest update has been created to show you all technology types so you can anticipate what type of coverage you will see in the area you choose.

These new maps will be updated more frequently, but navigating the map remains the same – just select a top provider in the area that matters to you to see their coverage.

If I don’t opt into background location, can I still use Coverage Maps?

Absolutely! We appreciate the contributions from our users that help us be able to publish coverage data, but you can still view top providers anywhere globally even if you are not a contributor to the map.

How do I take a Video Test?

Start by navigating to the video test section of the app, then tap the play button. We will play a short video that allows us to test your network streaming quality to find out the maximum resolution, load time, and buffering you should expect to experience on your network. At the end of your test, you will receive a report to understand whether your network is giving you what you need to stream high quality video.

What is a Video Test?

Our video test plays a short clip and measures a variety of metrics to determine the quality of your video streaming experience.

Taking a video test will give you valuable information about the video streaming experience you can expect, including recommendations for which devices will work best for video on your network.

Use the report at the end of the video test to understand whether your network is giving you the expected video quality playback, and to discover which devices would be optimal given the maximum resolution supported by your network.
