Ookla Ranks Internet Performance in the World’s Largest Cities, Plus Read 34 New Ookla Market Reports

You’ve come to rely on the Speedtest Global Index™ for our ranking of internet performance in countries around the world. Today we’ve expanded that resource to include internet speed rankings for some of the world’s largest cities. Read on to find out which city has the fastest download speed, learn how to find the information you’re looking for, and view a sneak peek at our 34 latest Ookla Market Reports™.

Shanghai and Beijing are the fastest cities on the Speedtest Global Index

The Speedtest Global Index now ranks median internet download speeds in nearly 200 cities all over the world. The Speedtest Global Index shows China topped the list with Shanghai as the fastest city on our list for mobile with a median download speed of 158.63 Mbps, while Beijing was fastest for fixed broadband during September 2022 at 238.86 Mbps.

Our list includes the two largest cities from each country. The cities must also have over 500,000 inhabitants and sufficient samples to be included. They are ranked according to median download speed based on Speedtest® data from the month prior.

Ookla Market Reports benchmark internet performance in 34 countries around the world

This quarter we are showcasing Q3 2022 Speedtest Intelligence® data from 34 countries in our Ookla Market Reports. Africa

  • Côte d’Ivoire: MTN was the fastest mobile operator with a median download speed of 16.73 Mbps. CANALBOX was fastest for fixed broadband at 44.34 Mbps.
  • Kenya: Safaricom had the fastest median download speed over mobile at 22.19 Mbps. Faiba was fastest for fixed broadband (25.66 Mbps).
  • Libya: Almadar Aljadid was the fastest mobile operator in Libya during Q3 2022 with a median download speed of 12.42 Mbps.
  • Tanzania: A median download speed of 17.63 Mbps made Halotel the fastest mobile operator in Tanzania during Q3 2022.

Americas

  • Argentina: Personal had the fastest median download speed over mobile (29.41 Mbps) and Movistar was fastest for fixed broadband (87.20 Mbps).
  • Bolivia: VIVA had the highest mobile Consistency with 80.1% of results showing at least a 5 Mbps minimum download speed and 1 Mbps minimum upload speed.
  • Brazil: The fastest mobile operator was Claro with a median download speed of 37.17 Mbps.
  • Canada: TELUS was the fastest mobile operator in Canada with a median download speed of 76.03 Mbps. Rogers was fastest for fixed broadband (223.89 Mbps).
  • Colombia: WOM was the fastest mobile operator with a median download speed of 15.60 Mbps. Movistar was fastest for fixed broadband at 125.32 Mbps.
  • Dominican Republic: Claro had the fastest median download speed among mobile operators at 27.74 Mbps. Altice was fastest for fixed broadband at 23.54 Mbps.
  • El Salvador: Claro also had the fastest median download speed over mobile in El Salvador at 33.83 Mbps.
  • Ecuador: The fastest mobile operator was CNT with a median download speed of 34.03 Mbps. Netlife was fastest for fixed broadband at 63.35 Mbps.
  • Guatemala: Claro was the fastest mobile operator with a median download speed of 28.56 Mbps. Tigo had the fastest median download speed over fixed broadband at 26.90 Mbps.
  • Jamaica: Digicel+ was the fastest fixed broadband provider with a median download speed of 45.27 Mbps.
  • Mexico: Telcel had the fastest median download speed over mobile at 36.07 Mbps. Totalplay was fastest for fixed broadband at 74.64 Mbps.
  • Peru: Claro was the fastest mobile operator with a median download speed of 21.94 Mbps.
  • Trinidad and Tobago: Digicel had the fastest median download speed over mobile at 38.19 Mbps.
  • United States: T-Mobile was the fastest mobile operator with a median download speed of 116.14 Mbps. Spectrum was fastest for fixed broadband at 211.66 Mbps.

Asia

  • Cambodia: SINET had the fastest median download speed over fixed broadband at 40.51 Mbps.
  • China: China Mobile was the fastest mobile operator with a median download speed of 132.33 Mbps. China Unicom was fastest for fixed broadband at 177.70 Mbps.
  • Singapore: Singtel had the fastest median download speed over mobile at 112.28 Mbps.
  • Vietnam: Viettel was the fastest mobile and fixed broadband provider with a median download speed over mobile of 44.81 Mbps and 88.69 Mbps for fixed broadband.

Europe

  • Albania: Vodafone was the fastest mobile operator with a median download speed of 46.75 Mbps. Digicom was fastest for fixed broadband at 77.83 Mbps.
  • Belgium: Telenet had the fastest median download speed over fixed broadband at 126.79 Mbps.
  • Denmark: YouSee was the fastest mobile operator in Denmark with a median download speed of 118.32 Mbps. Fastspeed was fastest for fixed broadband at 270.80 Mbps.
  • Estonia: The fastest operator in Estonia was Telia with a median download speed of 72.95 Mbps. Elisa was fastest over fixed broadband at 84.09 Mbps.
  • Finland: DNA had the fastest median download speed over mobile at 74.65 Mbps. Lounea was fastest for fixed broadband at 103.79 Mbps.
  • Germany: Telekom was the fastest mobile operator in Germany with a median download speed of 78.85 Mbps. Vodafone was fastest for fixed broadband at 112.58 Mbps.
  • Latvia: LMT had the fastest median download speed over mobile at 63.59 Mbps. Balticom was fastest for fixed broadband at 203.31 Mbps.
  • Lithuania: The operator with the fastest median download speed was Telia with 102.09 Mbps. Cgates was fastest for fixed broadband at 131.63 Mbps.
  • Poland: Orange had the fastest median download speed over mobile at 43.02 Mbps. UPC was fastest for fixed broadband at 206.22 Mbps.
  • Turkey: Turkcell was the fastest mobile operator in Turkey with a median download speed of 51.92 Mbps. TurkNet was fastest for fixed broadband at 50.94 Mbps.

Oceania

  • Australia: Telstra was the fastest mobile operator in Australia with a median download speed of 95.83 Mbps. Aussie Broadband was fastest for fixed broadband at 67.40 Mbps.
  • New Zealand: MyRepublic had the fastest median download speed over fixed broadband at 271.12 Mbps.

Early Testing Shows How Fast the New iPhone 14 and Galaxy Z Fold4 Are (Spoiler: They’re Fast)

Consumers across the world have been waiting for the recent launches of new Apple iPhone 14 devices and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4. With new chipsets and technologies, Ookla® was curious to see how much faster these devices were performing against previous models, so we used Speedtest Intelligence® to look at data from select countries during the first few weeks after launch. We compared how the iPhone 14 devices are performing against their iPhone 13 counterparts over 5G and how the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is performing against the Galaxy Z Fold3 over 5G.

Note that device data differs across markets due to a variety of factors, including: 5G investments by governments and mobile operators, different 5G spectrum allocations by operator, 5G Availability, the number of 5G deployments, and other differences, including mobile 5G plans. Furthermore, it should be noted that the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro models launched in select markets on different days than the iPhone 14, which is why the date ranges differ slightly in each market in our analysis.

Key improvements to the new Galaxy Z Fold4 and iPhone 14

Consumers almost always want to know if the newest technology is worth the upgrade when they’re investing in a costly new phone. Each of these devices has various upgrades, but when it comes to performance, here’s a quick list of what’s different between the new and older models. 

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs. Galaxy Z Fold3

  • The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset as well as the Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 5G modem whereas the Galaxy Z Fold3 has the older Snapdragon 888 5G chipset.
  • The Fold4 has an upgraded Octa-core (1×3.19 GHz Cortex-X2 & 3×2.75 GHz Cortex-A710 & 4×1.80 GHz Cortex-A510) and the Fold3 has an Octa-core (1×2.84 GHz Cortex-X1 & 3×2.42 GHz Cortex-A78 & 4×1.80 GHz Cortex-A55).

Apple iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13

  • The Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have Apple A16 CPU chipsets, which we expect to be faster than the iPhone 13s, whereas the iPhone 14 has the Apple A15 CPU chipset.
  • The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 chipset for 5G, which also supports the 2.4 GHz n53 band for satellite, while the iPhone 14 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon X60 for 5G, which the iPhone 13 Pro Max and 13 Pro also use.
  • The Apple iPhone 13 models have 4 GB of memory, whereas the newer iPhone 14 models have 6 GB of memory.

Australia

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs. Galaxy Z Fold3 performance, Australia, 5G

Speedtest Intelligence shows the Galaxy Z Fold4 was not  statistically faster  than the Fold3 in Australia. The Galaxy Z Fold3 had a median 5G download speed at 338.58 Mbps and the Fold4 at 309.40 Mbps. The median upload speed was roughly the same, with the Fold4 achieving 23.71 Mbps  and the Fold3 at 22.72 Mbps. 

Recommendation: Australian Galaxy Z Fold3 users may want to wait to upgrade their phone until speeds improve, unless you really want other new features the Fold4 offers.

Apple iPhone

iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13 performance, Australia, 5G

Our data shows every new iPhone 14 model offering faster median download speeds than their iPhone 13 counterparts in Australia. The iPhone 14 Pro Max had the fastest median 5G download speed at 347.67 Mbps, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro (327.09 Mbps). Even the iPhone 14 base model was comparable to the iPhone 13 Pro Max at 303.44 Mbps to 306.92 Mbps, as well as the iPhone 13 Pro (299.88 Mbps). The iPhone 13 base model “lagged” behind at a fast 265.48 Mbps.

Upload speeds were generally similar, with the iPhone 14 models ranging slightly faster from 23.92 Mbps to 24.50 Mbps, and the iPhone 13 models ranging from 17.84 Mbps to 20.24 Mbps. 

Recommendation: iPhone 13 users in Australia who want faster speeds should consider upgrading their phone to a new iPhone 14 model.

Brazil

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs. Galaxy Z Fold3 performance, Brazil, 5G

During the first month of the Galaxy Z Fold4’s launch, Brazilian 5G consumers who upgraded saw tremendous improvements over the Galaxy Z Fold3. The Fold4 dramatically outpaced the Fold3 with a median download of 483.26 Mbps and median upload of 46.20 Mbps to the Fold3’s 173.09 Mbps download and 25.70 Mbps upload.

Recommendation: Galaxy Z Fold3 users in Brazil should upgrade their phone to the Galaxy Z Fold4 if they have access to 5G.

Apple iPhone

iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13 performance, Brazil, 5G

Speedtest Intelligence reveals that every iPhone 14 model performed much faster than their iPhone 13 counterparts on 5G in Brazil. The iPhone 14 Pro Max raced ahead at 493.31 Mbps, then the iPhone 14 Pro (429.82 Mbps), and iPhone 14 (350.69 Mbps). The iPhone 13 (220.14 Mbps), iPhone 13 Pro Max (215.27 Mbps), and iPhone 13 Pro (200.35 Mbps) trailed behind.

Upload speeds were faster on the iPhone 14 models, ranging from 32.41 Mbps to 37.39 Mbps, whereas the iPhone 13 models ranged from 25.52 Mbps to 26.04 Mbps. 

Recommendation: Brazilian iPhone 13 users should absolutely consider an upgrade to the new iPhone.

Canada

Samsung Galaxy Z FoldSamsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs. Galaxy Z Fold3 performance, Canada 5G

Canadian consumers saw a moderate increase in 5G download speed if they upgraded their phone from the Galaxy Z Fold3 to the Fold4, with the Fold4 achieving a median download speed of 202.23 Mbps to the Fold3’s 165.36 Mbps. Upload speed remained relatively flat between the two models with the Fold4 achieving 27.73 Mbps and the Fold3 26.77 Mbps.

Recommendation: Canadian Galaxy Z Fold3 users should feel confident that upgrading their phone to the Fold4 will give them a faster 5G experience.

Apple iPhone

iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13 performance, Canada, 5G

The new iPhone 14 models raced ahead of their iPhone 13 counterparts in Canada. The iPhone 14 Pro Max achieved a median 5G download speed of 198.12 Mbps, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro (193.53 Mbps), and then iPhone 14 (189.85 Mbps). The iPhone 13 Pro Max was the fastest iPhone 13 model at 149.78 Mbps, followed by the iPhone 13 Pro (145.60 Mbps), and iPhone 13 (133.64 Mbps). 

The iPhone 14 models were also faster for median upload speed ranging from 25.78 Mbps to 28.01 Mbps, whereas the iPhone 13 models ranged from 17.80 Mbps to 21.03 Mbps. 

Recommendation: Canadian iPhone 13 users should beeline straight to their mobile operator to upgrade to a new iPhone 14 model.

France

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold

Speedtest Intelligence revealed that French consumers saw a jump in speeds over the past month if they upgraded from the Galaxy Z Fold3 to the new Fold4, which achieved a median download speed of 290.83 Mbps over 5G. The Fold3 was far behind with a median download speed at 217.18 Mbps. 5G upload speeds were similar with the Fold4 at 15.81 Mbps and the Fold3 at 14.58 Mbps.

Recommendation: French Galaxy Z Fold3 users shouldn’t hesitate to immediately upgrade to the Fold4 for a faster 5G experience.

Apple iPhone

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs. Galaxy Z Fold3 performance, France, 5G

The iPhone 14 models were all faster than their iPhone 13 counterparts in France. The iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro models had the fastest median 5G download speeds at 318.97 Mbps and 297.57 Mbps, respectively, while the iPhone 14 followed at 259.62 Mbps. The iPhone 13 Pro Max was the fastest iPhone 13 model at 259.73 Mbps, with the iPhone 13 Pro (247.50 Mbps) and iPhone 13 (224.40 Mbps) following. 

Upload speeds remained relatively similar, with all of the iPhone 14 models ranging between 16.02 Mbps to 19.44 Mbps, and the iPhone 13 models ranging from 15.01 Mbps to 16.43 Mbps.

Recommendation: iPhone 13 users in France should absolutely consider upgrading their phone to a new iPhone 14 model for faster speeds and new features.

Saudi Arabia

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs. Galaxy Z Fold3 performance, Saudi Arabia, 5G

Saudi consumers who upgraded to the Galaxy Z Fold4 might not have noticed a marked improvement on their already blazing fast 5G speeds, with the Fold4 achieving a median 5G download speed of 435.10 Mbps to the Fold3’s 403.11 Mbps. Even on upload, the speeds were roughly the same at 38.78 Mbps and 35.20 Mbps for the Fold4 and Fold3, respectively. 

Recommendation: Galaxy Z Fold3 users in Saudi Arabia don’t really need to upgrade your phones for great speeds. Base your decision on whether you want the other new features the Fold4 offers.

Apple iPhone

iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13 performance, Saudi Arabia, 5G

The launch of the new iPhone 14 models showed a similar story in Saudi Arabia as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. The new iPhone 14 models were all faster than their iPhone 13 counterparts, but all of the iPhones we looked at were very fast on 5G. The new iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro models had the fastest download speeds at 432.96 Mbps and 429.61 Mbps, respectively, while the iPhone 14 base model was next at 396.18 Mbps. The iPhone 13 Pro Max and Pro followed at 392.44 Mbps and 391.14 Mbps, respectively, while the base iPhone 13 model was next at 385.68 Mbps. 

Upload speeds were faster on the iPhone 14 models, which ranged from a median speed of 34.90 Mbps to 35.85 Mbps, while the iPhone 13 models ranged from 30.14 Mbps to 31.62 Mbps.

Recommendation: Saudi iPhone 13 users should consider upgrading their phone to a new iPhone 14 model for faster speeds and new features, but most iPhone 13 users still experience very fast speeds.

Singapore

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs. Galaxy Z Fold3 performance, Singapore, 5G

Consumers in Singapore saw a noticeable increase in median 5G download speeds by upgrading to the Galaxy Z Fold4 during the first month after its launch. The Fold4 outpaced the Fold3 346.79 Mbps to 293.20 Mbps for median 5G download speed. Upload speeds remained almost exactly the same with the Fold4 reaching a 5G median download speed at 33.83 Mbps to the Fold3’s 33.19 Mbps. 

Recommendation: Galaxy Z Fold3 users in Singapore should rush to see how they can upgrade their phone to the Fold4 for faster speeds and new features.

Apple iPhone

iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13 performance, Singapore, 5G

Speedtest Intelligence reveals that in Singapore the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro models had much faster median 5G download speeds than their already fast iPhone 13 counterparts. The iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro models achieved median download speeds of 377.78 Mbps and 397.53 Mbps, respectively. However, iPhone 13 model users are still experiencing fast speeds. The iPhone 13 Pro Max achieved 273.14 Mbps, the iPhone 13 Pro at 249.54 Mbps, and the iPhone 13 at 247.81 Mbps. The iPhone 14 base model didn’t record enough samples to be included in our survey for Singapore.

Speedtest Intelligence also showed that upload speeds over 5G didn’t vary too significantly, with the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro models achieving 37.60 Mbps and 36.86 Mbps, respectively, and the iPhone 13 models ranging from 32.23 Mbps to 33.74 Mbps.

Recommendation: iPhone 13 users in Singapore won’t regret upgrading their phone to a new iPhone 14 model for faster speeds, but most iPhone 13 users already experience fast speeds.

South Korea

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs. Galaxy Z Fold3 performance, South Korea, 5G

Home to Samsung’s headquarters, South Korea has some of the fastest 5G speeds in the world. However, consumers who upgraded from the Fold3 to the Fold4 haven’t yet seen a noticeable improvement upon their already super fast internet experience. The Galaxy Z Fold4 reached a similar median 5G download speed as the Fold3 at 520.29 Mbps to 513.39 Mbps, respectively. However, the Fold4 was just faster than the Fold3 for upload speed at 51.96 Mbps to 42.65 Mbps. 

Recommendation: It’s hard to say “wait to upgrade” to South Korean Galaxy Z Fold3 users, but with such ridiculously fast speeds on the Fold3 that are comparable to the Fold4, users should consider waiting — unless you really want other new features the Fold4 offers.

Apple iPhone

iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13 performance, South Korea, 5G

We’re jealous of iPhone users in South Korea, who experienced lightning fast 5G download speeds on every model of iPhone we surveyed, which ranged from 570.01 Mbps to 663.43 Mbps. While we didn’t find a statistically significant fastest median 5G download speed, the iPhone 14 Pro had a median download speed of 663.43 Mbps, the iPhone 14 Pro Max at 635.23 Mbps, the iPhone 13 Pro Max at 602.17 Mbps, the iPhone 13 Pro at 596.18 Mbps, and the iPhone 13 at 570.01 Mbps. The base model of the iPhone 14 didn’t have enough samples to be included.

Median 5G upload speeds for the iPhone 14 models were also very fast, ranging from 37.14 Mbps to 62.46 Mbps. However, the iPhone 13 models still had very fast upload speeds, which ranged from 41.96 Mbps to 43.45 Mbps.

Recommendation: South Korean iPhone 13 users who want to upgrade their phone to a new iPhone 14 model should do so for the new features — 5G speeds are extremely fast no matter what model you have.

Switzerland

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs. Galaxy Z Fold3 performance, Swtizerland, 5G

Speedtest Intelligence shows that Swiss Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 users only saw a moderate increase in median 5G download speed when upgrading from the Fold3, with the Fold4 achieving a median download speed of 232.70 Mbps to the Fold3’s 202.69 Mbps. The Fold4 was faster than the Fold3 for median upload speed at 49.31 Mbps to 39.76 Mbps during the same time period.

Recommendation: Swiss Galaxy Z Fold3 users have a tough decision: Speeds aren’t much faster yet for the new model, so unless you really want other new features the Fold4 offers, you may want to wait.

Apple iPhone

iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13 performance, Switzerland, 5G

iPhone consumers in Switzerland waiting to see how the new iPhone 14 performs can rest easy. The new iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro models are faster than their iPhone 13 predecessors, achieving median 5G download speeds at 242.41 Mbps and 214.62 Mbps, respectively. The iPhone 13 Pro Max and Pro models only achieved 192.70 Mbps and 184.53 Mbps, respectively, during the same time period. While there weren’t enough samples to evaluate the iPhone 14, the iPhone 13 had a median 5G download speed at 158.33 Mbps. 

The iPhone Pro Max and Pro had faster upload speeds than their iPhone 13 counterparts at 41.99 Mbps and 43.84 Mbps, respectively, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Pro models achieved 36.11 Mbps and 35.05 Mbps, respectively. 

Recommendation: iPhone 13 users in Switzerland who want faster speeds shouldn’t hesitate to upgrade their phone to a new iPhone 14 model and new features. 

Taiwan

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs. Galaxy Z Fold3 performance, Taiwan, 5G

Taiwanese consumers experienced roughly the same median 5G download speed for the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Fold3 at 321.12 Mbps and 320.78 Mbps, respectively. If you’re concerned about upload speed, the Fold4 does pull ahead of the Fold3 on 5G, 47.44 Mbps to 37.32 Mbps. 

Recommendation: We noticed operator speed makes a large difference to device performance in Taiwan, so check our Ookla Market Report™ to see what kind of speeds you should expect from your operator. If your operator makes the cut, you should consider upgrading your phone. Other Galaxy Z Fold3 users may want to wait to upgrade their phone until speeds improve, unless you really want other new features the Fold4 offers.

Apple iPhone

iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13 performance, Taiwan, 5G

Speedtest Intelligence reveals that iPhone 14 models in Taiwan were much faster than iPhone 13 models, which were already very fast. The iPhone 14 Pro Max and 14 Pro had the fastest median 5G download speed at 373.25 Mbps and 366.28 Mbps, respectively, while the iPhone 14 followed at 329.46 Mbps. The iPhone 13 Pro Max was the fastest iPhone 13 model at 319.53 Mbps, followed by the iPhone 13 Pro (298.37 Mbps) and iPhone 13 (272.79 Mbps).

Download speeds for the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro were fast at 41.30 Mbps and 42.39 Mbps, respectively.The iPhone 14 (33.91 Mbps) was more on par with the iPhone 13 Pro Max (34.84 Mbps) and iPhone 13 Pro (34.05 Mbps). The iPhone 13 trailed behind at 29.61 Mbps.

Recommendation: Most iPhone 13 users in Taiwan aren’t lacking for 5G speeds, but iPhone 13 users should upgrade their phone to a new iPhone 14 model for faster speeds and new features.

United States

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs. Galaxy Z Fold3 performance, United States, 5G

According to Speedtest Intelligence, the Fold4 outperformed the Fold3 in the U.S. with a median 5G download speed of 165.63 Mbps to 124.12 Mbps. Upload speeds were roughly the same with the Fold4 at 15.58 Mbps and the Fold3 at 15.96 Mbps.

Recommendation: Galaxy Z Fold3 users in the U.S. should embrace the Fold4 with open arms. Not only will you experience new features, you’ll continue to see faster speeds, especially as providers expand in 5G investments across the country.

Apple iPhone

Apple iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13 performance, United States, 5G

Even the base model of the iPhone 14 substantially outperformed every iPhone 13 model in the U.S. The iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro models led the way for fastest median 5G download speed at 177.92 Mbps and 174.84 Mbps, respectively, while the iPhone 14 was at 150.08 Mbps. The iPhone 13 Pro Max and Pro models followed behind at 121.19 Mbps and 121.08 Mbps, respectively, and the iPhone 13 trailed at 109.48 Mbps.

Upload speeds were relatively similar, with the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro models reaching median 5G upload speeds of 19.22 Mbps and 18.37 Mbps, respectively. The iPhone 14 followed at 15.91 Mbps. The iPhone 13 models weren’t much further behind, ranging from 13.20 Mbps to 15.39 Mbps. 

Recommendation: iPhone fans in the U.S. who are waiting to see how the iPhone 14 performs should feel confident in taking the plunge to upgrade their phones.

  • Afghanistan: The fastest mobile operator in Afghanistan was Afghan Wireless (6.82 Mbps).
  • Bangladesh: Banglalink was the fastest mobile operator in Bangladesh with a median download speed of 19.00 Mbps.
  • Bhutan: TashiCell had the fastest median download speed over mobile at 25.81 Mbps. 
  • Brunei: Imagine was the fastest mobile operator in Brunei at 111.09 Mbps.
  • Cambodia: SINET had the fastest median download speed over fixed broadband (41.86 Mbps). Cellcard was fastest over mobile at 28.69 Mbps.
  • China: China Mobile was the fastest mobile operator with a median download speed of 147.45 Mbps. China Unicom was fastest for fixed broadband at 214.17 Mbps.
  • Indonesia: Telkomsel was the fastest Indonesian mobile operator at 20.85 Mbps.

  • Austria: Magenta had the fastest median fixed broadband download speed (156.33 Mbps). 
  • Belgium: Telenet had the fastest median download speed over fixed broadband at 131.96 Mbps, while Telenet/BASE had the fastest median download speed over mobile at 69.40 Mbps.
  • Denmark: YouSee was the fastest mobile operator in Denmark with a median download speed of 129.39 Mbps. Hiper was fastest for fixed broadband at 249.76 Mbps.
  • Estonia: The fastest mobile operator in Estonia was Telia with a median download speed of 80.48 Mbps. Elisa was fastest over fixed broadband at 85.98 Mbps.
  • Finland: DNA had the fastest median download speed over mobile at 91.56 Mbps. Lounea was fastest for fixed broadband at 105.57 Mbps.
  • Germany: Telekom was the fastest mobile operator in Germany with a median download speed of 90.33 Mbps. Vodafone was fastest for fixed broadband at 116.19 Mbps.

The Finals Are On, but Which Australian Football League Stadium Had the Best Mobile Performance?

The Australian Football League (AFL) Finals start this weekend and with the Pies holding off late challenges from the Lions and Port Adelaide to secure the top of the ladder — here at Ookla® we’re sure every team vying for a spot in the Grand Final at the MCG on Sept. 30 is sure to put on a show for fans across the country. With such a great footy season in 2023, the Finals are set to be a breathtaking, best-in-world spectacle, and Ookla wanted to find out which stadium’s mobile experience made fans the real winners this year.

Methodology

We used Speedtest Intelligence® to examine download and upload speeds and multi-server latencies for all mobile technologies and 5G at AFL stadiums with a 100-meter zone around the stadium from the start of the season in Q1 2023 through Q2 2023. We also used Consumer QoE™ data with the same criteria to determine the web page load time at each stadium to see which footy fans were racing ahead to post their team’s come-from-behind wins first, and which fans were left in a lurch waiting for web pages to load to check their rival’s scores.

While Sydney are out to avenge their stinging 2022 Grand Finals loss to Geelong, Swans fans should at least feel great knowing the Sydney Cricket Ground had one of the fastest median download speed of any stadium we surveyed with a download speed at 140.96 Mbps during Q1-Q2 2023. The SCG also had one of the fastest median upload speeds at 26.44 Mbps during Q1-Q2 2023, ensuring fans were getting all the latest real-time updates, and posting their photos and videos with relative ease.

Marvel Stadium was a runner up for both download and upload speeds at 117.50 Mbps and 23.06 Mbps during Q1-Q2 2023, with fans of the mighty Blues, the Dons, the Roos, the Saints, and the Bulldogs all sharing runner-up honors in the Docklands in Melbourne. Next on our list was Optus Stadium in Perth with Fremantle and West Coast fans experiencing a median download speed of 100.40 Mbps, followed by GIANTS Stadium in western Sydney at 81.34 Mbps, the Gabba in Brisbane at 70.63 Mbps, the MCG in Melbourne at 69.28 Mbps, and the Adelaide Oval at 66.79 Mbps. The GMHBA in Geelong and Heritage Bank Stadium in Gold Coast didn’t have enough samples to be included in this ranking.

For context, the city of Geelong had a median mobile download speed at 87.60 Mbps during July 2023 and greater Gold Coast had a download speed of 95.32 Mbps during the same time period according to the Speedtest Performance Directory™.

Looking at download speeds over 5G during Q1-Q2 2023, there was no statistically fastest 5G download speed among AFL stadiums we surveyed. However, every stadium we evaluated except the Gabba had median 5G download speeds over 100 Mbps, with the Gabba having a median download speed of just 92.08 Mbps. While there was no winner over 5G, GIANTS Stadium saw a median 5G download speed at 182.61 Mbps, the SCG at 171.43 Mbps, Marvel Stadium at 166.66 Mbps, Optus Stadium at 133.82 Mbps, and the MCG at 122.62 Mbps. The Adelaide Oval, the GMHBA, and Heritage Bank Stadium didn’t have enough 5G samples to be included.

Fans at Marvel Stadium were able to upload their videos from matches the fastest, with the fastest median 5G upload speed at 34.27 Mbps. The SCG (29.02 Mbps), MCG (27.35 Mbps), and GIANTS Stadium (27.16 Mbps) followed with median 5G upload speeds greater than 20 Mbps.

Note that some 5G plans may have limited 5G access and 5G coverage varies by provider.

Multi-server latencies showed good parity between stadiums

Latency, also known as ping, is the reaction time of your network’s roundtrip connection, which is particularly important for streaming, video chats, and online gaming. For those footy fans who might be video chatting and bragging to their friends about their seats (or more likely their team winning against their friend’s team), latency is increasingly a very important measure for real-time online interactions.

Much like the middle of the ladder this season, the AFL stadiums we surveyed had a tight range of multi-server latencies for all mobile technologies combined with the SCG having the lowest at 28.97 ms and GIANTS Stadium having the highest at 36.17 ms. Multi-server latencies over 5G were about the same, with the SCG being the lowest at 28.63 ms and the Gabba having the highest at 35.86 ms. With lower latencies indicating a more responsive network, those looking to livestreaming a last second winner at the SCG might have a slightly better experience for their friends with less lag than those at the Gabba.

Speed and latency are important, but they’re not the only thing footy fans need from their mobile network while watching their team battling it out on the oval. 

Using Consumer QoE data, we looked at web page load time data, which reflects consumers’ real-world experiences of trying to use the internet, to see the stadiums where fans could access websites like social media without any delay. A lower web page load time means fans wait less for websites to load and can get straight to bragging to their friends about their team’s come from behind victory. With a 2016 Google research study reporting 53% users leave a webpage if it takes more than three seconds to load, fast page load times are very important when gauging mobile users’ experience using their network. We’re happy to report all of the stadiums we surveyed fell under this benchmark during Q1-Q2 2023, with some fans experiencing slightly faster load times than others.

The SCG and GIANTS stadium led the pack once again, with a median page load time of 1,457 ms (1.457 seconds) and 1,459 ms (1.459 seconds), respectively, though there was no statistical winner. Marvel Stadium (1,533 ms) and Heritage Bank Stadium (1,540 ms) followed, with the Adelaide Oval (1,602 ms), the Gabba (1,606 ms), the MCG (1,623 ms), and GMHBA Stadium (1,654 ms) all having a median page load time under 1,700 ms. Optus Stadium was the only AFL stadium to have a page load time over 1,700 ms, leaving Dockers and Eagle fans waiting just a hair longer than their eastern Aussie counterparts.

Despite All Odds, Global Internet Speeds Continue Impressive Increase


“A lot has changed” we wrote in our 2019 global roundup of internet speeds based on the Speedtest Global Index. Little did we know how much was about to change. But two things remain the same: the internet is getting faster and the Speedtest Global Index is still a fantastic resource for tracking improvements on a global and country level (if we do say so ourselves). Today we’re taking a look back at how much internet speeds have increased over the past four years and which countries have seen some of the largest gains.

Mobile download speed jumped 59.5% over the last year globally, fixed broadband up 31.9%

The global mean of download speeds improved over the last 12 months on both mobile and fixed broadband to 55.07 Mbps and 107.50 Mbps, respectively, in July 2021. Mobile saw an increase of 59.5% when comparing July 2020 to July 2021 and fixed broadband saw an increase of 31.9%, according to the Speedtest Global Index.

Looking further back, mean download speed over mobile was 98.9% faster in July 2021 than in July 2019, 141.4% faster when comparing July 2021 to July 2018, and 194.0% faster when comparing July 2021 to June 2017, the month we began tracking speeds on the Speedtest Global Index. Over the last two years there were only two months when the global average for mobile download speed did not show an upward slope: February and March 2020. Speeds began increasing again in April 2020, but did not recover to pre-February levels until May 2020. This coincides with initial lockdowns due to COVID-19 in many countries.

On fixed broadband, mean download speed was 68.2% faster in July 2021 than in July 2019, 131.3% faster in July 2021 than in July 2018, and 196.1% faster in July 2021 than in June 2017. There was a similar dip in download speed over fixed broadband in March of 2020 as we saw on mobile. The speed increased again in April 2020 but did not recover to a pre-March level until April 2020.

Top 10 rankings are somewhat constant over three years, U.S. and Canada slip off in 2021

There has been surprising parity of which countries continue to occupy the top 10 spots on the Speedtest Global Index in July of each year. However, the lists for mobile and fixed broadband are radically different, with only one country (South Korea) showing up on both lists in 2021.

The United Arab Emirates and South Korea maintain their first and second place rankings for mobile in both 2020 and 2021 and China and Qatar merely flip-flop for third and fourth place. It’s interesting to see Australia and Canada decline in the rankings although their speeds have increased dramatically during the past three years. 5G is shifting mobile rankings where even countries with 5G (which few countries had in 2019) need a strong 5G focus to maintain their presence at the top of the list lest they be outpaced by other countries with larger investments in 5G.

The fixed broadband rankings are more dynamic than those on mobile. Monaco traveled up and down the top 10 from sixth place in 2019 to 10th in 2020 to first place in 2021. Singapore ranked first or second in all three years and Hong Kong (SAR) was in the top four. Romania was solidly in fifth place while South Korea dropped lower in the ranking every year. Chile and Denmark both debuted in the top 10 in 2021 and the United States dropped off the list.

We were curious to see if countries that made the top 10 in July 2021 for either mobile or fixed broadband were also performing well on the other medium, so we plotted the percentage difference from the global average for mobile download speed against download speed on fixed broadband. Note that the global average increased between 2020 and 2021 and that Liechtenstein and Monaco are not included in this comparison as they did not have sufficient samples to be listed on both axes.

Most countries that made the top 10 in July 2021 for either mobile or fixed broadband were performing well over the global average for both at that point in time. South Korea and the U.A.E. stood out with mean mobile download speeds that were more than 240% faster than the global average and fixed broadband downloads that were more than 70% faster than the global average. China’s mobile download speed was more than 180% faster than the global average and the country was more than 70% faster than the global average for fixed broadband. Switzerland’s mobile and fixed broadband download speeds were close to 100% faster than the global average.

Chile and Thailand are in a quadrant that shows both had faster than average fixed broadband download speeds, but their mobile download speeds were slower than the global average in July 2021. Australia, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Saudi Arabia were in the opposite quadrant with faster than average mobile speeds and below average fixed broadband speeds.

Comparing the chart for July 2021 to that of July 2020, we saw a wide variety of outcomes. Countries with increases compared to the global average on mobile and fixed broadband included Australia, Cyprus, Denmark, Hong Kong, Romania and the U.A.E. Chile and Norway showed dramatic increases compared to the global average on fixed broadband and declines on mobile. Bulgaria, China, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Switzerland increased on mobile but showed little change on fixed. South Korea and Qatar increased on mobile compared to the global average and declined on fixed. Singapore and Thailand declined on both mobile and fixed broadband compared to the global average.

Ditch the Lag: Cities with Great Gaming Culture and Low Ping

Yes, you can game from anywhere with an internet connection. But if you’re at all competitive, it’s nice to play from somewhere with low ping and fast internet speeds. Plus when you need to leave the house, it’s extra nice to know you’re also surrounded by gamer culture. We’ve examined February 2019 Speedtest results in 35 cities that are known for their esports events, gaming conferences, game companies and more to find out who has the advantage and ranked them based on their ping.

The top contenders

First place Bucharest, Romania is home to super-low ping, a lightning fast download speed and a thriving gaming culture. From Bucharest Gaming Week (which includes the CS:GO Southeast Europe Championship and the FIFA National Tournament) to their numerous local game studios, Bucharest is a great place to be a gamer whether you’re online or out and about.

The next five gaming cities with the lowest pings are all in Asia. Hangzhou, China comes in second overall with a fast ping and world-class download speeds. This city is so devoted to its gamers that it opened a $280 million gaming “city” in 2018 and plans 14 new esports arenas before 2022. Coming in third, Chengdu, China has an equally low ping to our first two contenders and serves as one of two host locations in China for the Global Mobile Game Confederation (GMGC). Both Hangzhou and Chengdu are also franchise holders in the Overwatch League, giving local gaming fans something to cheer about. Fourth place Singapore, host of the 5th Annual GameStart Convention in October 2018, had only a slightly slower ping than the first four cities and the fastest download speed of any of the cities we considered.

South Korea is home to the fifth and sixth best cities for gamers. A satellite city of Seoul, Seongnam-si boasts the Pangyo Techno Valley (a.k.a. the Silicon Valley of Korea) and numerous game development companies. Perfect for a city with a 9 ms ping. Though Incheon’s ping was a little slower at 12 ms, gamers there can console themselves with the city’s gamer cred — the 2018 League of Legends World Championship was held in Incheon’s Munhak Stadium.

Coming in at number seven, Budapest, Hungary is an emerging game city, having hosted its first big esports event (the V4 Future Sports Festival) in 2018, but a 12 ms ping makes them a strong contender. More established Malmö, Sweden is number eight with a slightly slower average download speed but the city is headquarters to Massive Entertainment, creators of Tom Clancy’s The Division series, Far Cry 3, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and many more.

Vancouver, Canada, North America’s only qualifier for the top gaming cities list, comes in at number nine with a 12 ms ping and many gaming companies including the Canadian arms of Nintendo of Canada and EA (Electronic Arts). We included both Shanghai, China and Moscow, Russia on the top gamer cities list as both had a 12 ms ping as well, though the internet speeds in Shanghai are superior. Shanghai will also host the International Dota 2 in 2019 while Moscow is known for Epicenter.

The rest of the pack

Notably absent from the list above is most of the western hemisphere. Cities in North America were held back by their high pings. Cities in South America suffered from high pings and also slow internet speeds — something that esports leagues have complained is a barrier to investment.

Our full list of gaming cities provides wider geographical representation, even if the internet performance is not always as stellar. You’ll find Los Angeles in 27th place, behind Seattle, Boston and Las Vegas. And São Paulo, Brazil has the best showing in Latin America at 23rd.

Ookla’s New 5G Map Tracks 5G Rollouts across the Globe

After years of preparation, 5G is finally rolling out in city after city around the world. Also known as “Fifth Generation” Wireless Technology, 5G is the biggest thing to come to mobile after nearly a decade of 4G LTE, offering theoretical speeds up to 5 times faster. Not every city currently benefits, however, as 5G availability depends on a variety of factors including government regulation and technological improvements by mobile operators. If you’re as eager as we are to see which cities are 5G ready, you’ll love the Ookla 5G Map™.

Introducing the Ookla 5G Map™

The interactive Ookla 5G Map tracks 5G rollouts in cities across the globe. We update the map weekly with the information available to us about 5G deployments as they occur.

Click on an individual pin to see more detailed information including city name, a list of operators who have rolled out 5G, and the status of the 5G network in the area. The status is divided into two types of availability: limited and commercial. Limited availability is when a 5G network is present but devices are limited to select users, usually in a testing environment. Commercial availability refers to a 5G network where any consumer can purchase a device for use on this network.

At this point all of the deployments we’ve mapped are 5G New Radio (NR). To learn more about the types of 5G and other network intricacies, visit our comprehensive 5G guide. As different types of networks launch we’ll continue to expand this map to provide you with accurate, in-depth information.

Currently, the majority of identified deployments are based on corporate press releases and other publicly available communications. As deployments continue to become commercially available and tests taken with Speedtest use a 5G connection, identified deployments will also be based on Ookla data.

Where we’ve seen 5G so far

At time of launch, we’ve identified 20 operators that have deployed 5G networks in 294 locations across the globe. As certain locations benefit from multiple rollouts, the total number of deployments comes to 303. Swiss operators Swisscom and Sunrise are leading the 5G charge by providing 5G network accessibility in a combined total of 217 cities, each with commercial availability. Across the ocean, 21 cities in the United States have 5G availability. All but two of these rollouts being launched by AT&T with limited availability. Verizon launched their 5G network with commercial availability in two Midwest cities: Chicago and Minneapolis.

In South Korea we are tracking 16 cities with limited availability and two with commercial availability for 18 total 5G rollouts. The country’s capital city of Seoul benefits from 5G accessibility served by all three major operators: SK Telecom, LG Uplus and KT Telecom.

Telstra and Optus in Australia operate limited availability 5G networks in 10 cities, many of these in the more populated coastal regions. We’re also tracking 5G rollouts in a number of European countries (Estonia, Finland, Spain and Italy) as well as in Qatar, South Africa and United Arab Emirates.

Your Black Friday/Cyber Monday Guide to iPhone 15 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5 Performance

To upgrade or not to upgrade, with Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals on the latest iPhone and Samsung devices on the horizon you may be asking yourself just that question. We analyzed data from Speedtest Intelligence® in 13 major markets to see how well the Apple iPhone 15 devices and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5 models are performing in comparison to last year’s models over 5G to help you make an informed decision. For details on performance by Samsung Galaxy S23 models, read our analysis from earlier this year. We’re especially interested in seeing if technical improvements on iPhone 15 models including support for WiFi 6E drive better performance.

Data for iPhone models is provided for the period from September 22-October 20, 2023, while data for the Samsung models is for the period from August 11-October 20, 2023. Keep in mind that device data differs across markets due to a variety of factors, including: 5G investments by governments and mobile operators, different 5G spectrum allocations, and mobile 5G plans. As many of these devices are very new, the sample counts in some countries are still low so the statistical ranges of expected performance are wider for the newer devices than the older models.

In Australia, two out of four iPhone 15 models showed median 5G download speeds that were significantly faster than their iPhone 14 equivalents during the September 22-October 20, 2023 period. Speedtest Intelligence reveals the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max both had a 14% better download speed than their prior year counterparts. There was no statistical winner for the iPhone standard model or the iPhone Plus in Australia during this period.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 had a 30% better download speed than the Galaxy Z Flip4 during the August 11-October 20, 2023 period in Australia, while there was no statistical winner for the Galaxy Z Fold.

Recommendation: Depending on your model of choice, only half the devices surveyed merit an upgrade based on performance alone in Australia.

iPhones mostly worth the upgrade in Brazil

Three out of four iPhone 15 models in Brazil showed median 5G download speeds that were significantly faster than their iPhone 14 equivalents during the September 22-October 20, 2023 period. Speedtest Intelligence showed the iPhone 15 had a better download speed than the iPhone 14, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max having a 8% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and the iPhone 15 Pro showing a 1% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro. There was no statistical winner for the iPhone Plus in Brazil during this period.

All iPhones show improvement over prior models in Canada

All four iPhone 15 models in Canada showed median 5G download speeds that were significantly faster than their iPhone 14 equivalents during the September 22-October 20, 2023 period. Data from Speedtest Intelligence demonstrated the iPhone 15 had a better download speed than the iPhone 14, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max having a 26% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the iPhone 15 Pro Plus showed a 12% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro Plus, and the iPhone 15 Pro had an 8% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro.

The Galaxy Z Fold5 had a better download speed than the Galaxy Z Fold4 during the August 11-October 20, 2023 period in Canada, while there was no statistical winner for the Galaxy Z Flip.

Recommendation: iPhone users in Canada should consider an upgrade based on performance, while Samsung Galaxy fans should make a decision based on which model they’re considering.

Three iPhone models show decent improvement over prior versions in France

Three out of four iPhone 15 models in France showed median 5G download speeds that were significantly faster than their iPhone 14 equivalents during the September 22-October 20, 2023 period. Speedtest Intelligence reveals the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Pro Max both had 18% better download speeds than their respective prior year models. The iPhone 15 Pro had a 5% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro. There was no statistical winner for the iPhone Plus in France during this period.

There was no statistical winner for the iPhone standard model or the iPhone Plus in Germany during this period.

Recommendation: Apple users won’t see major performance improvements from the new models, but the Galaxy Z Fold5 is worth the upgrade on performance alone.

India sees better performance on three iPhone models

No significant performance gains on new devices in the Philippines

Neither the iPhone 15 Pro nor the iPhone 15 Pro Max had a statistically better median download speed over 5G than their prior year models during the September 22-October 20, 2023 period in the Philippines. There were not enough samples to properly assess the performance of the other two iPhone models.

Likewise, there was no statistical winner for 5G median download speed during the August 11-October 20, 2023 period for the Galaxy Z Flip or the Galaxy Z Fold in the Philippines.

Recommendation: Filipino consumers looking to upgrade their phones to the latest models will have to look for reasons beyond performance.

Galaxy Z Fold5 sees performance improvement in South Korea

Mobile speeds in South Korea are already fast with a top 10 performance on the Speedtest Global Index™ as of September 2023. New phones may not push performance boosts, though, as Speedtest Intelligence data did not show significant increases in median download speed over 5G for the iPhone 15 Pro or the iPhone 15 Pro Max in South Korea during the September 22-October 20, 2023 period. However, the iPhone 15 Pro Max had a 16% better upload speed than the iPhone 14 Pro Max. There were not enough samples to properly assess the performance of the other two iPhone models.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold5 had a 10% better download speed than the Galaxy Z Fold4 during the August 11-October 20, 2023 period in South Korea, while there was no statistical winner for the Galaxy Z Flip.

Recommendation: If South Korean consumers are looking for better performance, upgrading from the Galaxy Z Fold4 to the Galaxy Z Fold5 is worth looking into.

Spain sees major increases in iPhone speed

Three iPhone 15 models in Spain showed median 5G download speeds that were significantly faster than their iPhone 14 equivalents during the September 22-October 20, 2023 period, and the improvements in performance were mostly greater than we saw in other countries, with the exception of the United States. Speedtest Intelligence reveals the iPhone 15 Pro had a 40% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro Max had a 36% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and the iPhone 15 had an 11% better download speed than the iPhone 14. There were not enough samples to properly assess the performance of the iPhone Plus.

There were not enough samples to evaluate the Galaxy Z Flip or the Galaxy Z Fold during the August 11-October 20, 2023 period in Spain.

Recommendation: Spanish iPhone fans should definitely upgrade their devices while Samsung users can hold off for now.

Unbeatable performance in U.A.E. makes upgrades unnecessary

While Speedtest Intelligence data did not show significant increases in median download speed over 5G for the iPhone 15 Pro or the iPhone 15 Pro Max during the September 22-October 20, 2023 period, performance likely isn’t a concern in the United Arab Emirates, whose blisteringly fast download speeds topped the Speedtest Global Index™ in September 2023. There were not enough samples to properly assess the performance of the other two iPhone models.

Similarly, there was no statistical winner for 5G median download speed during the August 11-October 20, 2023 period for the Galaxy Z Fold in the U.A.E., and there were not enough samples to evaluate the Galaxy Z Flip.

Recommendation: Consumers in the U.A.E. should upgrade if they are looking for the new features on the new phone models, but upgrades for performance are unnecessary.

iPhone upgrades are the way to go in the U.K.

All four iPhone 15 models in the United Kingdom showed median 5G download speeds that were significantly faster than their iPhone 14 equivalents during the September 22-October 20, 2023 period. Speedtest Intelligence reveals the iPhone 15 had a 16% better download speed than the iPhone 14, the iPhone 15 Pro had a 14% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max had a 10% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and iPhone 15 Plus has a 4% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Plus. 

There was no statistical winner for 5G median download speed during the August 11-October 20, 2023 period for the Galaxy Z Flip or the Galaxy Z Fold in the U.K.

Recommendation: iPhone users in the U.K. should see performance improvements that make upgrading to the latest models worthwhile. Samsung Galaxy users only need to upgrade if they are looking for new features.

U.S. consumers see some of the highest improvements when upgrading to new iPhone models

Not only did all four iPhone 15 models in the United States show median 5G download speeds that were significantly faster than their iPhone 14 equivalents during the September 22-October 20, 2023 period, the improvements in performance were greater than we saw in most other countries, with the exception of Spain. Speedtest Intelligence showed the iPhone 15 Plus had a 54% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Plus, the iPhone 15 had a 45% better download speed than the iPhone 14, iPhone 15 Pro Max had a 27% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and iPhone 15 Pro has a 25% better download speed than the iPhone 14 Pro. 

Samsung users also saw increased median download speeds over 5G when using the newer models during the August 11-October 20, 2023 period in the U.S. The Galaxy Z Flip5 had a 15% better download speed than the Galaxy Z Flip4, and the Galaxy Z Fold5 had a 10% better download speed than the Galaxy Z Fold4.

Recommendation: Upgrades for all this holiday season!

No performance boost on iPhone 15 Pro Max in Vietnam

The iPhone 15 Pro Max did not have a statistically better median download speed over 5G than the iPhone 14 Pro Max during the September 22-October 20, 2023 period in Vietnam. There were not enough samples to properly assess the performance of the other three iPhone models. Likewise, there were not enough samples to evaluate the Galaxy Z Flip or the Galaxy Z Fold.

Recommendation: Vietnamese consumers don’t need to upgrade to newer models on performance alone.

How Fast is the Internet at the Busiest Airports in Australia?

Almost all the way through our tour of internet speeds at the busiest airports in the world we find ourselves in Australia. With the delightful distinction of being both a continent and a country, we were able to look at more airports here than in any other country except the U.S. We’re proud to present data on which of Australia’s six busiest airports has the fastest free airport Wi-Fi and cellular speeds based on Speedtest data from March-May 2017.

Fastest airport Wi-Fi

There is some seriously fast free airport Wi-Fi in some parts of Australia.


In fact, download speed on the free airport Wi-Fi at Gold Coast Airport is faster even than that in Denver, which was previously the fastest seen of all the airports we analyzed around the world. Denver still has faster uploads, though—barely. The download speed at Perth Airport is also excellent and flyers who travel through Brisbane and Melbourne should also be able to use the free airport Wi-Fi with no complaints about speed.

All of these airports offer faster downloads over Wi-Fi than Australia’s average speed of 20.77 Mbps for downloads over mobile Wi-Fi.

The story is very different in Adelaide and Sydney, however. Download speeds at airports in both cities are as slow as they are at Shanghai Pudong International Airport and at Gatwick Airport. The connections are fast enough for basic emails and likely some social updates, but you will not want to try streaming video or catching a last minute client video conference.

Fastest airport cell

Cellular download speeds, on the other hand, are universally good at the airports we looked at in Australia. Taken as a group, they’re almost as good as the speeds we saw at airports in Canada and better on average than cellular speeds at airports we’ve surveyed on any other continent.


Although cellular downloads at Brisbane Airport are 35% faster than those at Gold Coast Airport, download speeds at almost every airport we analyzed outpaced the average cellular download speed in Australia of 41.96 Mbps. And Gold Coast Airport was not too far behind that average.

Wi-Fi or cell?


Face it, unless you’re trying to use the free airport Wi-Fi at airports in Adelaide or Sydney, there’s not a bad choice in the bunch. Wi-Fi at Gold Coast Airport and Perth Airport is so amazingly good that you probably want to use it because you can. And Brisbane Airport’s cellular download speed is 74% faster than their already good Wi-Fi download speed, while cellular downloads are 115% faster at Melbourne Airport than those over Wi-Fi. But for the most part, Australians and travelers to Australia will be very, very happy with internet performance at the airports we analyzed.

Regional trends

New South Wales

The airport in Sydney has a strong showings for cellular download speeds but the Wi-Fi download speed seriously suffers.

Queensland

Gold Coast and Brisbane Airports are very close to one another and both take top marks among airports we’ve analyzed—Gold Coast Airport for fastest Wi-Fi download speed in Australia (and the world) and Brisbane Airport for fastest cellular download speed in Australia.

South Australia

The only airport we examined in South Australia, Adelaide Airport had the second to worst download speed over free airport Wi-Fi in the country. Thankfully, the cellular download speed outpaces the country average.

Victoria

Melbourne’s airport performed well for cellular download speeds. The Wi-Fi download speed, albeit strong, is on the slow side among Australia’s busiest airports.

Western Australia

Perth Airport holds its own way out west with very fast Wi-Fi downloads and fast cellular downloads.

GOOOOAL: Which World Cup Finalist Scored the Fastest Internet in their Capital City?

Whether you call it soccer or football, everyone calls the World Cup fun. We couldn’t wait for the actual match-ups in June, so we decided to pit the qualifying countries against one another to see who has the fastest internet speeds in their capital cities. The results might surprise you.

Get ready to watch Russia best Brazil and Portugal defeat Iran; meanwhile, Argentina and Nigeria and Belgium and England are preparing for penalty shoot-outs.

Using data from Speedtest Intelligence for Q3-Q4 2017, we’ve calculated which capital cities of World Cup-qualifying countries have the fastest mobile and fixed broadband speeds. We also took a peek at the fastest carriers and internet service providers (ISPs) in each capital using Speed Score, a comprehensive metric that combines measures of internet performance at all levels.

Mobile winners

Iceland’s sixth place ranking for mobile download speed in the Speedtest Global IndexTM virtually assured that Reykjavík would come out at the top of the list of fastest World Cup contenders. Canberra represents Australia well with a second place finish for mobile download speeds among World Cup capitals. And Brussels, Belgium barely surpasses Bern, Switzerland for a third place finish.

Looking at the group draw, Group A fares the worst with 16th place Moscow, Russia being the capital city with the fastest mobile downloads in the group. In Group B, Spain comes out on top. Australia wins Group C, Iceland takes Group D, Switzerland leads Group E and South Korea has the fastest mobile download speed in Group F. Belgium finishes first in Group G and Poland prevails in Group H, despite a 13th place finish overall.

From a regional perspective, European capitals top the rankings with all 14 European World Cup capitals sitting in the top half of the list. Latin American, Middle Eastern and African cities fare worst. Asia’s two contenders are split with Seoul boasting the fifth fastest mobile download speed among World Cup capitals and Tokyo, Japan coming in 17th.

The fastest World Cup capital in Latin America (Montevideo, Uruguay) shows a 64.3% slower mobile download speed than Reykjavík. First place among African World Cup capitals, Rabat, Morocco is 68.8% slower than Reykjavík for mobile downloads. And Tehran, Iran, the fastest World Cup capital in the Middle East, is 72.9% slower than Reykjavík.

Fastest carriers

We also looked into which carriers were fastest in each of the 32 World Cup capital cities.

With Speed Scores ranging from 8.89 in Dakar, Senegal to 46.57 in Brussels, mobile carrier Orange was fastest in four cities and tied for fastest in one. Vodafone was fastest in both Lisbon, Portugal and Madrid, Spain with comparable Speed Scores in the two locations. The rest of the cities show the diversity of fastest carriers that you might expect from a worldwide competition.

Fixed broadband winners

Given that Iceland ranks second in the world for fixed broadband download speed on the Speedtest Global Index and has the world’s highest gigabit user penetration (GUP), we’re not surprised to see Reykjavík shut out the competition by coming out on top of World Cup contenders for fixed broadband speed, too. Seoul, South Korea comes in second for fixed broadband download speed among World Cup capitals and Paris, France takes third.

Group A again suffers on the fixed side with leader Russia coming in 13th based on Moscow’s fixed broadband download speed. Spain’s still the front-runner of Group B. France takes Group C, Iceland wins Group D, Switzerland tops Group E, South Korea reigns over Group F, England heads up Group G and Japan starts Group H based on average download speeds over fixed broadband in their respective capitals.

European capitals again fare well, with 12 of the 14 placing in the top half of fastest World Cup capitals for fixed broadband download speed. Belgrade, Serbia and Zagreb, Croatia rank 17th and 18th, respectively. Tokyo ranks much better for fixed broadband download speed than for mobile, which puts both Asian World Cup capitals in the top six.

With the exception of Panama City, Panama, which ranks 15th, all Latin American World Cup capitals are in the bottom half of the list for download speed over fixed broadband. As are all Middle Eastern and African capital cities.

Panama City’s fixed broadband download speed is 79.6% slower than Reykjavík’s. Riyadh, Saudia Arabia boasts the title of fastest World Cup capital in the Middle East, but is still 85.4% slower for fixed broadband downloads than Reykjavík. The fastest World Cup capital in Africa — Rabat, Morocco — is 91.7% slower than Reykjavík.

Comparing Speed Scores for fixed broadband across World Cup capitals, Vodafone had wins in Berlin, Germany and Lisbon and Orange took Paris and tied for first in Madrid. The rest of the fastest ISPs vary by location as listed below:
